The TRF Beefeaters FAQ (Yes, we really are asked these questions. Constantly.)
Where's the nearest bathroom?
I love this one. Do you honestly think that after you come up and tell me that you have to go, I'm going to keep that little tid-bit to myself?
Are there bathrooms inside?
Well, there are lots of bushes… OK, yes, there are 10 privies (bathrooms) inside with a total of 302 flush toilets, and 245 urinals for the guys. You can relax now.
May I take your picture?
Of course! It is what I live for!
What do I do if I need to go to the car?
This is usually followed by a lengthy explanation of why they need to go to the car. It's OK; just get a hand stamp when you exit. Also, you are not required to tell us all the details of what you did when you come back either. (Unless it was kinky, Bartrand likes to hear that sort of thing).
Where's the nearest place to get a beer?
I guess we just look like beer drinkers. Go inside. Stay to the right, it will be on your right side. It's called Merlin's Tavern. Tell the girls I said 'Hello'.
Is that your real accent?
Is that yours?
Can I have a stub?
Beefeaters do not have stubs.
-but I need it to prove I was here!
We are required to take the whole ticket. Perhaps you can find something else to prove you were here. I have heard that if you write a nice note to the main office they will send you a cancelled ticket after the season is over.
Where's the gin?
Out back. In a barrel. Where I drown people who think they are being clever by asking me 'Where's the gin?'.
Where is the chapel?
Inside.
If I wear a costume do I get in for free?
No.
-but I did last year!
No, you didn't. To the best of my knowledge the TRF has never allowed free entrance if you wore a costume. I know for a fact that that has not been the case since 1979, because Captain George has been working the front gate for that long. (You might remember him as 'Lord of the Gate', or at the least you probably remember the codpiece!). About ten years ago we let children in on Halloween weekend only, if they were in Halloween costume.
Is that pike (that you carry) real?
Yes, but the blade is a bit dull from bashing people in the head who ask silly questions. (When we patrol the courtyard we carry a pike)
May I hold your pike?
But my lady, I hardly know you!

Seriously- We never let patrons hold the pike; they might bash us in the head for being silly.
What kind of vine is that?
(The front gate area is covered with beautiful vines). Actually there are three different vines growing together. There is Jack Bean Vine, or Purple Hyacinth Bean Vine (Dolichos Lablab), which has the small pink or purple flowers and purple bean pods, Coral Vine (Antigonon leptopus), which has small pink or coral flowers, and Filipino Morning Glory (Ipomoea), with the large blue flowers.
Where did you get your uniform (costume)?
It was issued to me by the King.
It's great! Who made it?
The TRF Beefeater’s uniforms (costumes) were designed and created, by hand, by Mrs. Eulice Vail. You may also have known her as the Grand Duchess. Our current incarnation of uniforms were hand made by the Amber, the frogprincess. You may know her.
What do Beefeaters have under their skirts?
Nothing you haven’t seen before, my lady, just a little bigger!!
-May I look?
Actually many ‘ladies’ fail to ask first before they look. And for the guys out there: “I don’t do hairy knuckles.”
What's going on inside?
A festival. (Yes, people actually come up to the gate and ask).
This ticket is for a whole group, see it says GROUP on it.
That means that the ticket was sold at the group discount. I’m never sure if I should be scared that someone really believes the ticket is for a vague ‘group of people’ or insulted that they think I would believe it.
Is smoking allowed inside?
Boy, you smokers sure are getting paranoid. Yes, smoking is allowed, and no, you may not bum a fag.
Have you seen a guy in blue jeans and a white T-shirt? (you may substitute any description you like here).
Probably. Do I remember seeing them? Probably not. Our average daily attendance is over 21,000 people a day. I'm good, but I'm not that good!
How do I get your job?
I suppose it is a matter of your timing. Turnover is very low, so you never know when we might need a new Beefeater. We usually find replacements through friends and relatives, but if you're really interested let one of us know in the off season, but I prefer referrals. There are, however, many other jobs to be had at the faire. If you have your heart set on playing one of the costumed characters you see, (the ones with the official performers medallions), you’ll have to audition. Auditions are held in the spring, usually May, and you have to be willing and able to attend rehearsals for eight weekends before faire opens. My advice to people wanting to find a job at the faire is to find someone who is doing a job you would like to do, and discreetly ask them who they work for, and how to find this person. If you can talk to their employer while they are not too busy during faire do it. If not, find out how to get a hold of them during the week. You can also contact the festival office; certain jobs are listed with them.
I need that ticket so I can get in tomorrow, it’s a two day ticket right? Is this ticket good for the whole festival? (or variations on the theme)
All tickets are good for one day only. They are printed with the dates that they are valid, and are good any one of those days. There are two day tickets, consisting of two halves, each half clearly marked for which one day, a Saturday or a Sunday, they are valid. All tickets are good for one day only. You must surrender your ticket to enter the festival grounds. Tickets are good for one day only.

Yes, I know when you go to a movie theatre you get half the ticket back, but since movies haven't been invented yet, we keep the whole ticket!
How long did you train to become a Beefeater?
15 minutes. No really- I showed up my first day, I was shown samples of that year’s tickets, told not to take any others, and not to let in coolers or pets. And ‘Oh, yes –Have fun!’ That was the sum of my training, and it’s been downhill ever since!

The Forum Rules. a. k. a. 'Easy Ways to get on the Captain’s bad side'
By posting in the forums you agree to abide by these rules.
These rules may be ammended at any time, and at my pleasure.
I am a board dictator. What I say goes. So, arguing with me, or a designated moderator, in regards to board policy or commenting in threads about moderated items is Easy Way number one.
There is no such thing as the right to free speech here. These forums are not a democracy. Posters have no rights beyond the rights I give them. I know that sounds really cold and oppressive, so be it. It's the only way I can maintain the level of control and the quality of posting that these forums require. So, with that in mind, I can't really allow people to question the rules. The main policy then is: abide or leave. And, on a similar note:
If I close your thread, don't start another thread to ask me why
Commenting about moderated items, serves no purpose as moderation is between "you" and the forum’s staff. If I close your thread, don't start another thread to ask me why. When I lock a thread, I usually post a reply explaining why. If this explanation doesn't make sense to you, feel free to email me through the link provided on every page of this site. Do not post another thread asking me why I closed your thread, because you're just being a pain in the ass, so I'll close that thread too and you will be banned.
No spamming. There is an Edit button at the top of every one of your posts. Please use it rather than posting several times back to back.
As I've mentioned before, the forums are a busy place. So, for the sake of keeping it as clean and concise as possible, PLEASE edit your posts instead of posting several times back to back. You can't post the same thing multiple times on the board, or post the same thing over and over in a certain thread or forum, or continuously make posts that have no real content or relevance to what is being discussed. Spamming can even just be posting too much - as a general rule, don't post more than two or three threads in a forum within a reasonable length of time. Do not post more than twice in a row in the same thread. If you need to answer more than one person in the thread, please use the quote function and put it in one post. Run-of-the-mill commercial spam will be deleted out of hand, unless it’s funny, in which case I’ll just remove the links.
Trolling will not be tolerated.
Trolling is an Internet term that means you're not posting to actually start or participate in a good discussion, but simply to anger another member or group of members. Posting in order to bait other users, moderators or administrators will not be tolerated. If I tell you you are a Troll, then you are a Troll. Don't even try to argue with me about it.
Personal attacks (or ‘Flaming’) are NOT acceptable under any circumstances.
Flaming is the act of trying to unfairly disparage a person or a person's post by attacking the poster and not the post. It's not wrong to disagree with someone. But, on these forums, it's best to disagree by stating your own opinion and backing it up with fact. You shouldn't direct your responding post AT the person you disagree with. You shouldn't use bits of their posts to serve as proof or counter to your own. If your argument can't stand on its own legs without having to refer back to the post you took exception to, then your post is no more valid in our eyes than theirs was. READ THIS PART: Responding to a Flame is JUST as bad as having flamed someone yourself. If someone comes into a thread and posts comments that you deem "flaming" then don't draw attention to the chucklehead, report them. (Right beside the "Quote" and "Edit" buttons is a link to "report this post".) I will take care of them from there. There is an 'ignore' button. It is your friend. Use it.
Once you've stated your opinion, if someone disagrees and states their own opinion, don't try to explain your stance further. You aren't going to change anyone's mind. Just let it go.
This is the single most violated Easy Way Rule on these forums and at the same time it should be one of the easiest to follow. You see each person is just as entitled to their opinion as you are your own. So, after posting your opinion, they are just as entitled to post their own. The problem arises when you feel that by stating their opinion yours is somehow devalued. This is not the case. Try not to take it personally and don't respond to them to contradict them or to further explain your ideas. If you need to clarify your argument, then edit your initial post to provide more information. Don't waste forum space by repeating yourself. And for those who have an opposite opinion to the one initially posted, don't direct your comments AT the original poster. Just post your opinion, without referring to the original post or poster, and let it stand on its own merit. And, if the original poster responds to your post to clarify their position, report them to me. There is an 'ignore' button. It is your friend. Use it.
Derogatory comments regarding race, religion, creed, gender, nationality, sexual preference or disability will not be tolerated.
This forum does not discriminate against anyone! (Well, except ignorant, attention hungry chuckleheads that have nothing better to do with their lives than annoy other people.) Therefore, it is unacceptable to judge, condemn, or otherwise vilify or make fun of anyone that is not like you. If you can't make a point without degrading someone else, then you are NOT an element that I want on these boards. Everyone that comes here should feel safe and comfortable and free from the prejudice. If you disagree with this idea, then we don't want you here.
Doing anything that could be construed as annoying while I am absent from the boards and can not update, edit, delete, etc... then you're on the fast track to perma-banning.
This rule is based on the idea that someone is acting like a jackass because I'm away and they believe they won't be punished until I get back. I’ve better things to do with my time than baby sit these forums. Don’t think you’re getting away with something just because I don’t hit you with the ban stick right away.
The Beefeaters and by extension the TRF are the reason this forum exists. If you have to b@# about them, at least be constructive.
I can't stand seeing unconstructive criticism. It's worthless and serves no purpose whatsoever. That does not mean you can ONLY say nice things. It just means that if you want to benefit us, the TRF, and the community at large, then temper you criticism with examples of how to improve the situation, solve the problem, address the issue, etc.
No l337 speak or Lazy Typing. I don't have the patience to even scroll pass that crap. It will not be tolerated. Please try to keep it to English as well.
There are plenty of other places where this stuff is acceptable. But, here it is not. Here we value people who take their time and speak to us in an intelligent manner. There's all the time in the world for you to post. There's no sense in rushing yourself. Take your time. We'll wait. Also, don't put up full posts in other languages, be it binary or Latin. We don't want to look up what you're saying. Fragments, so long as they're defined, are fine.
If it's illegal in the states, then talking about it here is not accepted.
This should be a common sense rule but I’m posting it so no one can say I didn’t warn them. Because the servers are based in the states, then I qualify this rule based on laws within the states. That means I don't want to hear about theft, robbery, drugs, underage drinking, etc.
Violence in any form is not acceptable on these forums. Delivering violent commentary, advising violent action, promoting violent behaviour, etc. are grounds for immediate banning.
This is another rule that I feel is self-explanatory, and, hopefully I don't need to clarify or justify it. You can not commit violence on a person, idea, thing through text anyway, so it's pretty ignorant to type it in the first place.

Login and Registration Issues
Why can't I log in?
Have you registered? Seriously, you must register in order to log in. Have you been banned from the board? (A message will be displayed if you have.) If so, you should contact the webmaster or board administrator to find out why. If you have registered and are not banned and you still cannot log in then check and double-check your username and password. Usually this is the problem; if not, contact the board administrator -- they may have incorrect configuration settings for the board.
Why do I need to register at all?
You do not have to register to read the forums and announcements, but you do need to register in order to post messages in the forums or guestbook. Registration will also give you access to additional features not available to guest users such as definable avatar images, private messaging, emailing to fellow users, usergroup subscription, etc. It only takes a few minutes to register so it is recommended you do so.
Why do I get logged off automatically?
If you do not check the Log me in automatically box when you log in, the board will only keep you logged in for a preset time. This prevents misuse of your account by anyone else. To stay logged in, check the box during login. This is not recommended if you access the board from a shared computer, e.g. library, internet cafe, university cluster, etc.
How do I prevent my username from appearing in the online user listings?
In your profile you will find an option Hide your online status; if you switch this on you'll only appear to board administrators or to yourself. You will be counted as a hidden user.
I've lost my password!
Don't panic! While your password cannot be retrieved it can be reset. To do this go to the login page and click I forgot my password. Follow the instructions and you should be back online in no time.
I registered but cannot log in!
First check that you are entering the correct username and password. If you are sure you are entering the correct username and password then maybe your account needs activating. We require all new registrations be activated before you can log on. When you registered you were sent an email with instructions on how to activate your account. If you did not receive the email then check that your email address is valid. One reason activation is used is to reduce the possibility of rogue users abusing the board anonymously. Some email service providers automatically discard email generated our forum software as junk mail. Yahoo and Hotmail are known to do this, and there a probably others we don't know about. If you are sure the email address you used is valid then contact the board administrator.
I registered in the past but cannot log in anymore!
The most likely reasons for this are: you entered an incorrect username or password (check the email you were sent when you first registered) or the administrator has deleted your account for some reason. If it is the latter case then perhaps you did not post anything? It is usual for administrators to periodically remove users who have not posted anything so as to reduce the size of the database. Try registering again and get involved in discussions.

User Preferences and settings
How do I change my settings?
All your settings (if you are registered) are stored in the database. To alter them click the Profile link shown at the top of forum pages. This will allow you to change all your settings.
The times are not correct!
The times are almost certainly correct; however, what you may be seeing are times displayed in a timezone different from the one you are in. If this is the case, you should change your profile setting for the timezone to match your particular area, e.g. London, Paris, New York, Sydney, etc. Please note that changing the timezone, like most settings, can only be done by registered users. So if you are not registered, this is a good time to do so, if you pardon the pun!
I changed the timezone and the time is still wrong!
If you are sure you have set the timezone correctly and the time is still different, the most likely answer is summer time (or daylight savings time as it is known in the US). The board is not designed to handle the changeovers between standard and daylight time so during summer months the time may be an hour different from the real local time.
My language is not in the list!
Sorry, we only speak the King's English!
How do I show an image below my username?
There may be two images below a username when viewing posts. The first is an image associated with your rank; indicating how many posts you have made or your status on the forums. Below this may be a larger image known as an avatar; this is generally unique or personal to each user. You can upload an avatar if you are registered. Avatars must be 125 pixels x 125 pixels or less, and less than 6k in size.
How do I change my rank?
You cannot directly change the wording of any rank (ranks appear below your username in topics and on your profile) but by participating in discussions you accumulate a certain number of posts, and your rank will increase. Ranks also identify certain users. For example, moderators and administrators have a special rank. Please do not abuse the board by posting unnecessarily just to increase your rank (i.e. Bumping a topic) -- you will find the moderator or administrator will simply lower your post count.
When I click the email link for a user it asks me to log in.
Sorry, but only registered users can send email to people via the built-in email form. This is to prevent malicious use of the email system by anonymous users.

Posting Issues
How do I post a topic in a forum?
Easy -- click the relevant button on either the forum or topic screens. You may need to register before you can post a message. The facilities available to you are listed at the bottom of the forum and topic screens (the You can post new topics, You can vote in polls, etc. list)
How do I edit or delete a post?
Unless you are the board admin or forum moderator you can only edit or delete your own posts. You can edit a post by clicking the edit button for the relevant post. If someone has already replied to the post, you will find a small piece of text output below the post when you return to the topic that lists the number of times you edited it. This will only appear if no one has replied; it also will not appear if moderators or administrators edit the post (they should leave a message saying what they altered and why). Please note that normal users cannot delete a post once someone has replied.
How do I add a signature to my post?
To add a signature to a post you must first create one; this is done via your profile. Once created you can check the Add Signature box on the posting form to add your signature. You can also add a signature by default to all your posts by checking the appropriate radio box in your profile. You can still prevent a signature being added to individual posts by un-checking the add signature box on the posting form.
How do I create a poll?
Creating a poll is easy -- when you post a new topic (or edit the first post of a topic, if you have permission) you should see a Add Poll form below the main posting box. If you cannot see this then you probably do not have rights to create polls. You should enter a title for the poll and then at least two options -- to set an option type in the poll question and click the Add option button. You can also set a time limit for the poll, 0 being an infinite amount. There will be a limit to the number of options you can list, which is set by the board administrator
Back to top
How do I edit or delete a poll?
As with posts, polls can only be edited by the original poster, a moderator, or board administrator. To edit a poll, click the first post in the topic, which always has the poll associated with it. If no one has cast a vote then users can delete the poll or edit any poll option. However, if people have already placed votes only moderators or administrators can edit or delete it; this is to prevent people rigging polls by changing options mid-way through a poll
Back to top
Why can't I access a forum?
Some forums may be limited to certain users or groups. To view, read, post, etc. you may need special authorization which only the forum moderator and board administrator can grant, so you should contact them.
Why can't I vote in polls?
Only registered users can vote in polls so as to prevent spoofing of results. If you have registered and still cannot vote then you probably do not have appropriate access rights.

Formatting and Topic Types
What is BBCode?
BBCode is a special implementation of HTML for use on the BBS. You can disable it on a per post basis from the posting form. BBCode itself is similar in style to HTML: tags are enclosed in square braces [ and ] rather than < and > and it offers greater control over what and how something is displayed. For more information on BBCode see the guide which can be accessed from the posting page.
Can I use HTML?
Sorry, HTML is disabled. This is a safety feature to prevent people from abusing the board by using tags which may destroy the layout or cause other problems.
What are Smileys?
Smileys, or Emoticons, are small graphical images which can be used to express some feeling using a short code, e.g. :) means happy, :( means sad. The full list of emoticons can be seen via the posting form. Try not to overuse smileys, though, as they can quickly render a post unreadable and a moderator may decide to edit them out or remove the post altogether.
Can I post Images?
Images can indeed be shown in your posts. However, there is no facility at present for uploading images directly to this board. Therefore you must link to an image stored on a publicly accessible web server, e.g. http://www.some-unknown-place.net/my-picture.gif. You cannot link to pictures stored on your own PC (unless it is a publicly accessible server) nor to images stored behind authentication mechanisms such as Hotmail or Yahoo mailboxes, password-protected sites, etc. To display the image use the BBCode [img] tag).
What are Announcements?
Announcements often contain important information and you should read them as soon as possible. Announcements appear at the top of every page in the forum to which they are posted. Whether or not you can post an announcement depends on the permissions required, which are set by the administrator.
What are Sticky topics?
Sticky topics appear below any announcements in viewforum and only on the first page. They are often quite important so you should read them where possible. As with announcements the board administrator determines what permissions are required to post sticky topics in each forum.
What are Locked topics?
Locked topics are set this way by either the forum moderator or board administrator. You cannot reply to locked topics and any poll contained inside is automatically ended. Topics may be locked for many reasons.

User Levels and Groups
What are Administrators?
Administrators are people assigned the highest level of control over the entire board. These people can control all facets of board operation which include setting permissions, banning users, creating usergroups or moderators, etc. They also have full moderator capabilities in all the forums.
What are Moderators?
Moderators are individuals (or groups of individuals) whose job it is to look after the running of the forums from day to day. They have the power to edit or delete posts and lock, unlock, move, delete and split topics in the forum they moderate. Generally moderators are there to prevent people going off-topic or posting abusive or offensive material.
What are Usergroups?
Usergroups are a way in which board administrators can group users. Each user can belong to several groups (this differs from most other boards) and each group can be assigned individual access rights. This makes it easy for administrators to set up several users as moderators of a forum, or to give them access to a private forum, etc.
How do I join a Usergroup?
To join a usergroup click the usergroup link on the page header (dependent on template design) and you can then view all usergroups. Not all groups are open access -- some are closed and some may even have hidden memberships. If the board is open then you can request to join it by clicking the appropriate button. The user group moderator will need to approve your request; they may ask why you want to join the group. Please do not pester a group moderator if they turn your request down -- they will have their reasons.
How do I become a Usergroup Moderator?
Usergroups are initially created by the board administrator who also assigns a board moderator. If you are interested in creating a usergroup then your first point of contact should be the administrator, so try dropping them a private message.

Private Messaging
I cannot send private messages!
There are three reasons for this; you are not registered and/or not logged on, the board administrator has disabled private messaging for the entire board, or the board administrator has prevented you individually from sending messages. If it is the latter case you should try asking the administrator why.

I keep getting unwanted private messages!
In the future we will be adding an ignore list to the private messaging system. For now, though, if you keep receiving unwanted private messages from someone, inform the board administrator -- they have the power to prevent a user from sending private messages at all.

I have received a spamming or abusive email from someone on this board!
We are sorry to hear that. The email form feature of this board includes safeguards to try to track users who send such posts. You should email the board administrator with a full copy of the email you received and it is very important this include the headers (these list details of the user that sent the email). They can then take action.

Why isn't X feature available?
This software was written by and licensed through phpBB Group. If you believe a feature needs to be added then please visit the phpbb.com website and see what the phpBB Group has to say. Please do not post feature requests to the board at phpbb.com, as the Group uses sourceforge to handle tasking of new features. Please read through the forums and see what, if any, our position may already be for features and then follow the procedure given there.

Whom do I contact about abusive and/or legal matters related to this board?
You should contact the administrator of this board. If you cannot find who that is, you should first contact one of the forum moderators and ask them who you should in turn contact. If still get no response you should contact the owner of the domain (do a whois lookup) or, if this is running on a free service (e.g. yahoo, free.fr, f2s.com, etc.), the management or abuse department of that service. Please note that phpBB Group has absolutely no control and cannot in any way be held liable over how, where or by whom this board is used. It is absolutely pointless contacting phpBB Group in relation to any legal (cease and desist, liable, defamatory comment, etc.) matter not directly related to the phpbb.com website or the discrete software of phpBB itself. If you do email phpBB Group about any third party use of this software then you should expect a terse response or no response at all.
